⁉️Why should I approve my Warmblood mare if she (or damline) is Thoroughbred, and if she is or isn’t proven in sport?

I asked the same question once. And here’s what I learned…

Let me share the story behind the mascot horse and the very beginning of Warmblood Breeders Boutique.

My journey started because of a bloodline I fell in love with—the Holsteiner stallion South Pacific. He stood at The Oaks in California under the legendary Joan Irvine Smith, where I had the privilege to train and learn in the early 2000s. Her breeding legacy and love of South Pacific stayed with me.

Years later, in 2019, I wasn’t riding or breeding, but the urge to carry on South Pacific’s line was tugging at my heart. My fiancé Brad and I searched high and low for a South Pacific descendant. We finally found a yearling—she was unregistered, out of an unregistered dam—but she was the only mare we could find.

With the incredible support of the Holsteiner Verband North American District, we were able to:
• Register that filly
• Register and approve her dam
• Learn everything we didn’t know about white papers, full registration, breeding for sport vs breedingng for breeding, breeding approval, and so much more.

Originally, we only planned to have her branded. But the morning of the mare inspection we were attending, I got a call from The Holsteiner Verband: “You’re already there—why not inspect her for breeding approval?”

We said yes.

And that yes changed everything.

🌟Our mare—the granddaughter of South Pacific—was called “The highlight of the day” by the German judges. She received a score of 52, with 7s and 8s across the board, and an 8 for type, qualifying her to compete in Germany with other top mares.

We didn’t go—but our breeding journey officially began.

We chose Casall for her first breeding, not by popularity, but because not only did we like everthing about Casall, but more importantly, our mare matched exactly what kind of mare The Holsteiner Verband described would Improve Casall. That kind of feedback only comes when your mare is approved.

🐴 In 2024, our filly Southern Casalla was born.
• She received a 9 for type at her foal inspection
• She’s grown like a dream—balanced, kind, and correct
• And just this spring, she won her class at the Young Horse Show Series Region 1 for Yearling and qualified for finals.

‼️All of this from a filly that would’ve never even been registered or approved, and that would have been such a shame.

⭐️ That’s why I’m passionate about mare approval.

It’s not just about scores. It’s about understanding your mare, seeing where she excels, and where she needs a stallion to balance her traits. ‼️But more important where she can improve the stallion! ‼️Approvals guide thoughtful, strategic breeding.

❓So if you’re asking:
• “Should I approve my mare even if shes a Thoroughbred or has a Thoroughbred damline?”
• “Is it worth it if I’m just breeding for one foal?”
• “How do I know what stallion to pick?”

💥My answer is YES. APPROVE her. Learn more about her. Open the doors to smarter breeding choices.

💝And if you’re a small breeder without a website or a big name, that’s exactly why I created Warmblood Breeders Boutique—to give boutique breeders a place to be seen and supported.💝

You can list your sale horses for FREE on our site. And maybe, just maybe, your future star is already waiting there.

👍Here’s to smart breeding, beautiful mares, and bold dreams.
Wishing everyone a successful 2025 breeding season!
